Sous Chef

Visa sponsorship

Hospitality · Queenstown, New Zealand · Full-Time · $37/hr · Visa: Employer sponsored

Kabayan, if you have spent years at the pass and feel ready to lead, this could be your next step. A premium hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand, now being transformed, is hiring a Sous Chef to help guide the kitchen crew behind its various dining and bar venues.

The post is permanent and full-time, with a minimum of 40 hours in a week. The employer offers sponsorship under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) to the right candidate, and it welcomes New Zealand residents as well as international candidates who meet the requirements.

Your CV is your first impression, so let it tell the story of your time in senior kitchens: the hotel or restaurant outlets you helped run, the cooks you trained and your Food Safety certificate. If you have cooked overseas as an OFW, that belongs on it too, written clearly in English. You can get your chef CV ready with Build AI CV and apply with confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the food coming out of all the hotel's kitchen outlets, approve each prepared item, and protect the highest culinary standards.
  • Supervise every section's prep, rotation and mise en place, checking and correcting the work so the whole team is ready before service begins.
  • Make sure each section is well staffed by monitoring the roster and delegating duties to lower-grade chefs.
  • Step in on any section to prepare, cook and serve when the kitchen needs an extra pair of hands.
  • Manage food costs through stock rotation, accurate orders and par levels, so waste and spoilage stay low across storage areas.
  • Hire, train and develop kitchen staff, helping them grow while keeping the kitchen productive and harmonious.
  • Keep the workplace clean, safe and hygienic, following WHS guidelines, food safety standards and the hotel's grooming requirements.
  • Stay in close contact with the F&B Manager, outlet supervisors and front-of-house teams for smooth teamwork across all venues.

Requirements & Eligibility

  • You must hold a relevant trade qualification such as a Certificate in Cookery Level 4 or equivalent, or have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience as a Sous Chef or senior chef in a comparable kitchen.
  • Proven experience handling kitchen operations across multiple outlets in a premium hotel or restaurant, along with strong technical cooking skills and the ability to keep culinary standards consistently high.
  • Demonstrated experience leading, training and developing kitchen teams, and confidently managing the kitchen from day to day.
  • Solid understanding of food cost management, stock control and kitchen financial targets.
  • A current Food Safety certificate with full working knowledge of WHS requirements in a commercial kitchen, plus flexibility to work a rotating roster that includes weekends, evenings and public holidays.
