Planning an IT Career in Australia? Why a Backup Plan Matters Right Now

Are you a software engineer, data scientist or IT professional dreaming of a job in Australia? Maybe you are already working in tech in the Middle East or back home in the Philippines and hoping to take the next step. Before you set your timeline, it helps to know about a change in Canberra that is affecting how fast tech applications move, and what you can realistically expect.

A new order for skilled visa processing

A directive from the Home Affairs Minister came into effect in July, and since then Australia's skilled visa system has followed a different set of priorities. First in line are law enforcement and defence professionals who are already in Australia. Next come offshore applicants working in those same fields. After them are applicants in construction, healthcare and teaching who lodged their applications from inside Australia. Technology is not listed among the categories being fast-tracked, and industry groups report that applicants are noticing the effect right now.

During a recent parliamentary inquiry into migration, the Australian Computer Society (ACS), the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Information Industry Association described the same trend. IT visa processing has slowed considerably, and many of those stuck waiting are well-qualified people who followed every step correctly.

One applicant's story

A founder of a tech consultancy shared an example at the inquiry that stays with you. His firm wanted to sponsor a data scientist, but she became tired of waiting with no answers. The problem was not only the delay; it was the unpredictability. She had no idea when, or even whether, her application would progress. So she moved to Ireland, where she was welcomed quickly. She has since moved again, this time to the United States, and is reportedly earning several times what an Australian role would have paid her.

Migration advisors have long pointed out the lesson here: for skilled people with choices, not knowing can cost more than waiting longer with certainty. A six-month process with a clear timeline is something you can plan around. An eighteen-month process with no updates, however, pushes talented workers toward other countries.

Tips if your application is in progress (or about to be)

  • Watch your skills assessment dates. ACS assessments usually expire after two years, and more applicants are renewing theirs only because the visa decision has not arrived in time. Put reminders in your calendar well before the expiry date.
  • Do not rely on published timeframes. The Tech Council of Australia reported cases where visas that should have been processed within seven business days took months instead. Use published SLAs as the minimum for planning, never as a promise.
  • Ask about other pathways. Industry bodies mentioned streamlined intra-company transfer visas as a possible option for people already employed by multinationals with an Australian presence. If that describes your employer, it is worth raising with them.
  • Keep more than one door open. Places such as Ireland and parts of the US market have moved quickly to attract skilled candidates, so it is sensible, not negative, to pursue parallel options instead of treating Australia as your only route.

Why Australia's tech workforce matters to you

The most surprising finding in ACS's latest Digital Pulse report is that Australia's technology workforce shrank for the first time on record in 2026. The report partly links this to softer demand for workers, which it sees as temporary. It also stresses that migration channels must stay open for when demand recovers, especially because AI-driven skill needs are changing faster than the government's official skills lists can follow.

Put simply, today's slowdown may look like short-term triage. If it continues, though, Australian employers could be left without the specialist talent they need for the next wave of AI and technology growth.

Staying hopeful and prepared

Policies change, and they can change back. If you are working through a skilled visa application now, go in with realistic expectations, a complete and well-documented application, and a backup plan, instead of assuming past processing times still apply. Check official guidance regularly, and if your situation is complicated, get advice from a qualified source before making big decisions. Your skills took years to build, so give yourself options and do not let a slow queue hold your career back.
