New Zealand jobs for Filipino workers: check the accredited employer before you sign or pay
Visa guide · 2026-10-15 · 10 min read

New Zealand jobs for Filipino workers mostly run through one visa: the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). You need a job offer from an employer that Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has accredited, and that employer sends you the link to the online application. The visa costs from NZD $1540 and can let you stay up to 5 years, depending on the job. Before you sign anything, confirm the employer is on INZ's accredited list, remember that nobody should charge you a placement fee for a New Zealand job, and leave time for the Philippine paperwork with the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and the OFW Pass.
Why so many Filipino workers look at New Zealand
New Zealand's 2023 Census counted 99,264 people born in the Philippines, up from 67,632 in 2018. That 46.8 percent rise was the largest numerical increase of any overseas birthplace.
How the accredited employer route works
The AEWV is tied to one job with one employer. The business must be accredited by INZ, must hold an approved job check for the exact role it is offering you, and must offer at least 30 hours a week at no less than the market rate for that work.
Once those are in place, the employer sends you the link to the online form. Anyone promising to "file your work visa" with no employer link in sight deserves more questions. INZ currently shows 80% of AEWV applications processed within 5.5 weeks. The full conditions are on the INZ Accredited Employer Work Visa page, and our AEWV visa guide keeps the main points in one place.
Do you qualify? Skills, English and excluded jobs
You need 2 years or more of relevant experience, or a qualification at level 4 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF), in the same field as the job.
English depends on the skill level of the role. For jobs at ANZSCO or NOL skill level 3 to 5, you must show that you can speak and understand English, with test results no more than 2 years old; skill level 1 or 2 jobs do not need this. From 9 March 2026, INZ also recognises 47 additional skill level 1 to 3 occupations under the National Occupation List, including chef roles split by skill and seniority.
Some work sits outside the AEWV altogether: planting, maintaining, harvesting or packing crops in horticulture or viticulture, foreign crew on fishing vessels, and self-employment. A fruit-picking offer that promises an AEWV deserves suspicion.
Factory and plant roles suit many experienced Filipino workers. Browse our manufacturing jobs, or open this production planner and supply chain role in Hamilton to see how a New Zealand listing is set out.
Check the employer before you trust the offer
INZ publishes an accredited employer list that is updated daily. Search it by company or trading name, or by the employer's 13-digit New Zealand Business Number (NZBN).
Some accredited employers choose to stay out of the public results, so if a business is missing, check directly with the employer and keep their written reply. Never pay for the offer itself: INZ will decline an AEWV if you or your agent offered or promised money to the employer, or its agent, in exchange for a job offer. Read the agreement line by line as well, because an AEWV agreement cannot include unlawful deductions, a trial period or unacceptable bonding clauses.
What it costs, and what nobody may charge you
The peso figures are rough comparisons only, worked out through the Reserve Bank of Australia rates for 8 Oct 2026 (1.2413 New Zealand dollars and 43.67 pesos per Australian dollar). Rates change every day.
| Item | Amount | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| AEWV application | From NZD $1540 (about PHP 54,200) | Paid to INZ by card on its forms or at an approved Visa Application Centre, never into a bank account |
| Contract verification at MWO New Zealand | NZD17.50 | For workers who changed employers in New Zealand, came from another country, or entered on a visitor or student visa |
| OWWA membership at MWO New Zealand | NZD40.00 | Renewal or registration |
| Verified documents for a direct employer | NZD70.00 each | On MWO New Zealand's direct employer sheet |
| Placement fee for a New Zealand job | Not allowed | Barred for licensed agencies by a 2014 POEA advisory |
| Fees for the job or the employer's hiring costs | Not allowed | New Zealand rule, including through a third party |
The POEA advisory cited New Zealand's Wages Protection Act of 1983. Separately, New Zealand employers cannot charge you fees for a job or make you pay their recruitment costs, directly or through someone else.
For a sense of pay, New Zealand's adult minimum wage is $23.95 an hour before tax from 1 April 2026, or $958 for a 40-hour week (about PHP 33,700 at the same rates). Your AEWV job must pay at least the market rate for the role, which can sit well above that floor.
The Philippine side: DMW, MWO Wellington and the OFW Pass
A New Zealand visa lets you into New Zealand; it does not clear you to leave the Philippines as an OFW. Under the 2023 Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) rules, accredited foreign employers may advertise overseas vacancies only through DMW-licensed recruitment agencies or through the DMW itself. Before you deal with any agency, search the DMW directory of licensed recruitment agencies for a valid licence status.
Once you are working in New Zealand, keep your welfare membership current as well. Here is how OWWA membership renewal works from New Zealand, including the Migrant Workers Office counter in Wellington.
The MWO in New Zealand is at the Philippine Embassy, Level 1, 286 Thorndon Quay, Pipitea, Wellington 6011 (telephone +64-4-2601161). Its verification sheet for a direct employer asks for a Certificate of INZ Employer's Accreditation and a Philippine recruitment agency. If you are already in New Zealand and change employers, or arrived from another country or on a visitor or student visa, the MWO needs your contract verified before you can get an OEC.
Every OFW needs an OFW Pass, the renamed OEC, to depart for work overseas. It is valid for 60 days from issue for one exit only, and only medical certificates from a DOH-accredited clinic for OFWs count towards it. Our guide to the OFW Pass and its 60-day window covers that last stretch.
Your route from first application to boarding
- Prepare an English CV showing experience in the same field as the jobs you want; a tool such as Build AI CV can help you lay it out.
- Gather proof of skills: certificates of employment covering 2 years or more, or your level 4 or higher qualification papers.
- Check each employer on the INZ accredited list before you share your passport or pay anyone.
- Read the written offer and agreement for the hours, the market rate and any trial period, bonding clause or deduction.
- Apply through the employer's link, have any medical or chest X-ray done by a doctor on INZ's approved panel physician list where your country has one, and pay INZ by card.
- Complete the DMW steps through a licensed agency or the MWO: contract verification, the free online PEOS where required, and the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS).
- Get your OFW Pass, then book your flight so you leave within its 60-day window.
Getting help without getting scammed
You do not have to use an adviser for a New Zealand visa, and INZ will not prioritise an application because one is used. If you do pay for help, immigration advice must come from someone licensed by the Immigration Advisers Authority unless they are exempt; its page for migrants explains how to check the public register.
Real INZ emails end with immigration.govt.nz or mbie.govt.nz. In Advisory No. 17, Series of 2025, the DMW told OFWs in New Zealand to deal only with official INZ channels and the Migrant Workers Office. Report illegal recruitment to the DMW Migrant Workers Protection Bureau at 87221192 or mwpb@dmw.gov.ph.
Life on an AEWV: your rights and the limits
At work you have the same minimum employment rights as everyone else in New Zealand, including at least 4 weeks of paid annual holidays after 12 months of continuous employment and 10 days of paid sick leave a year for eligible employees.
Work visa holders cannot join KiwiSaver. Total time on AEWVs is capped at 5 years for most jobs, or 3 years for ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5 roles, after which you normally spend 12 months in a row outside New Zealand. A temporary visa carries no promise of residence, although Tier 2 roles on the Green List lead to a Work to Residence Visa after 2 years of working in New Zealand.

Common mistakes with New Zealand job offers
- Paying a placement fee. A request for one is a warning sign.
- Paying the employer for the job. It gives INZ grounds to decline your AEWV.
- Chasing crop-picking work on an AEWV. Horticulture and viticulture planting, harvesting and packing are excluded.
- Sending visa money to a bank account. INZ does not take payment that way.
- Using an old English test. For skill level 3 to 5 jobs, results older than 2 years will not count.
- Booking the flight before the OFW Pass. Wait until your clearance is issued.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for an AEWV without a job offer?
No. The AEWV is only for people with a job offer from an accredited employer, and that employer sends you the link to the online form. Be wary of anyone offering to lodge one for you without it.
Can a recruitment agency charge me a placement fee for a job in New Zealand?
A POEA advisory of 19 December 2014 said licensed agencies may not charge placement fees for New Zealand jobs. New Zealand employers also cannot charge you fees for a job or pass their recruitment costs to you, even through a third party.
How long does the AEWV take, and how long can I stay?
INZ shows 80% of AEWV applications processed within 5.5 weeks. Total time on AEWVs is capped at 5 years for most jobs, or 3 years for skill level 4 or 5 roles.
Do I need an English test for the AEWV?
Only if your job sits at ANZSCO or NOL skill level 3 to 5. Then you must show you can speak and understand English, with results no more than 2 years old; INZ lists the accepted evidence on its AEWV page.
I am already working in New Zealand and changing employer. What does the MWO need?
MWO New Zealand asks Filipino work visa holders who change employers to have the new contract verified before they get an OEC. It charges NZD17.50 for contract verification and NZD40.00 for OWWA membership renewal or registration.
Key takeaways
- The AEWV needs a job offer from an INZ-accredited employer, who sends you the application link.
- Check every employer on INZ's accredited list, by name or 13-digit NZBN, before you share documents.
- Placement fees for New Zealand jobs and payments for a job offer are off limits.
- Plan for both sides: the INZ visa and the DMW steps, including MWO verification and the OFW Pass.
- Your workplace rights match everyone else's, but AEWV stays are capped and residence is never automatic.
