Underground Heavy Diesel Fitter

Trade · Sydney NSW, Australia · Full-Time · $59/hr

Have you spent years keeping heavy machines running on farms, quarries, building sites or in a mine? Those skills could take you into an underground mining career in NSW.

The employer wants qualified mechanics and fitters with real, hands-on heavy equipment experience. Agricultural machinery, earthmoving, civil construction, quarrying, heavy vehicles and mining backgrounds are all relevant. What matters most is what you can show you have actually done, like finding faults, completing repairs and keeping complex mechanical systems running safely and efficiently, not only the names of past employers.

These are residential roles, so you live and work in a regional NSW community with no FIFO arrangement. Rosters differ by site, with options built to give you regular time at home. Heavy equipment work done in the Middle East or back home in the Philippines can be part of your story.

Key Responsibilities

  • Find faults in engines, hydraulics, transmissions, drivelines and braking systems
  • Check equipment closely and pick up mechanical problems early, before they turn into major failures
  • Service and look after heavy mobile machinery working in tough operating conditions
  • Keep underground loaders, haul trucks, drills and other specialised machines in working order
  • Handle mechanical repairs and component replacements, including major change-outs, rebuilds and overhauls
  • Respond to breakdowns and get equipment safely back into operation
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance according to site requirements
  • Refer to technical manuals, drawings and hydraulic schematics during diagnosis
  • Record repairs, services, defects and maintenance work, and report equipment issues and maintenance needs to supervisors
  • Do pre-start inspections and follow site isolation and permit procedures
  • Work safely with the maintenance team in a high-risk environment

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Trade qualification that is recognised, such as a Certificate III (or equivalent) in Diesel Fitting, Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Plant Mechanics or Agricultural Mechanics
  • Proven, practical background in the repair and maintenance of heavy machinery
  • A genuine employment history, with relevant mechanical duties you are able to demonstrate
  • Strong skills in mechanical fault-finding and diagnostics
  • Working knowledge of engines, hydraulics, transmissions, drivelines and braking systems
  • Experience in underground mining is beneficial but not mandatory
  • Caterpillar, Sandvik or Epiroc equipment experience is highly regarded
  • Heavy-equipment experience from agriculture, earthmoving, civil, quarrying or heavy transport will be considered
  • A current driver's licence
  • Able to work rostered shifts and settle into a residential mining environment
  • Good communicator who works well within a crew, and can also work independently while following set safety procedures
  • Open to learning new machinery and underground mining practices
  • Extra qualifications in mining, confined space, working at heights or first aid are advantageous
  • Willing to undergo pre-employment medical and functional assessments, and able to meet drug and alcohol testing and National Police Check requirements
  • Able to supply supporting evidence of your qualifications and relevant work experience
  • Visa sponsorship is available for eligible candidates
